Today, I am truly grateful for this practice because it embodies what I am all about.
I'm calling this one the Suzy Sunshine Day.
It's really how I got the nickname Suzy Freaking Sunshine in the first place. Today's focus is all about finding gratitude in a negative situation. We all experience negativity, almost everyday. But I can guarantee that if you just take a little bit of effort you can find something to be grateful for in any situation.
One of my favorite movies is Pollyanna (and the remake Polly). The movie is about a little girl who lost her parents and goes to live with her rich and disconnected Aunt. In the movie Pollyanna turns a whole town from being disgruntled and disheartened to kind and joyful. The best part is how she did it, she helped everyone by playing the glad game. Each time they presented her with how terrible things were she found something to be glad about.
I play the glad game all the time. When people call me to vent they literally have to give me that warning in the beginning, because if not I will automatically find the silver lining. I suppose that could get a little annoying if you just want to be angry in your life. But think of it this way. When negative scenarios happen in your life and you dwell on how terrible they are does that change your situation? Not usually. However, if you are able to change your demeanor when they occur and find something positive to be grateful for at the very least you will feel better. And who knows feeling better could lead to finding a solution to your situation.
Today, think of s situation in your life that is negative. Then in your journal list 10 things that you can be grateful for in regards to that situation. For example, when I had my son, I was released from my job and could not find work for a while. But here were a few things that I would list:
- I am truly grateful for having a home to live in.
- I am grateful that I have the opportunity to be a stay at home mom.
- I am truly grateful for the opportunity to go to water aerobics.
- I am grateful for friends that are helping me during this time.
- I am so grateful to have family who I can count when I really need them.
